It’s fair to say I’ve experienced the wine trade in all its forms during my 20-something years in the business. Yes, there have been long lunches in Italy and beach barbies in Oz, but I’ve also delivered wines in three-ton lorries in central London, run an upmarket wine shop in Mayfair and sold a few million cases to all the major UK retailers along the way.
Working with Paul, my old Western Wines sparring partner, gives me a fresh challenge. My goals are to enjoy what I do – that box is pretty well ticked – and to help earn Off-Piste a reputation for innovation and fresh thinking. We want the company to be a force to be reckoned with in the wine trade, and we reckon we’re well on the way.
After two decades in the wine business, I have come to the conclusion that I have found my metier. That may be disappointing news for the MCC selectors and golf fans everywhere, but I believe in focus. I love the wine trade and can’t think of any other business I’d rather be in.
I’m very much at home driving around the UK selling wine, or flying around the world buying it. It’s what I do.
Setting up in business with my old mate Ant seemed like a natural step forward after Western Wines was swallowed up in 2006. We both share the same hunger for success … and a desire to have fun while we strive for it.
